COLLEGE PARK, Md. - As part of the week leading up to Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 6, Umterps.com will highlight one of Maryland's five men's swimming and diving seniors each day. Today's senior is Brian Honore.
Brian Honore has been a vital cog in Maryland's well-oiled machine known as its distance crew since his arrival to campus. Last season was a breakout year for Honore as the junior set Maryland school records in the 500 free (4:23.27), 1650 free (15:22.92), and the 800 free relay (6:34.02) while also establishing career bests in the 200 free (1:38.20) and 1000 free (9:16.80) at the ACC Championships in College Park. This season his times in the 200 free and 500 free rank ninth in the conference.
HONORE Q & A
Umterps.com : What has been the one highlight that sticks out in your mind from your time at Maryland?
BH: The biggest highlight that I remember was breaking two records at our home pool last year at ACCs. Some of the other memories are hanging out with the team and going cliff jumping. I think my time at Maryland has lived up to my expectations of college.
Umterps.com: Think back four (or five) years. How have you changed as an athlete? As a person?
BH: I think that I have changed a lot. I feel like I have grown up as a person and feel like I can handle more responsibilities as a swimmer and as a person. I learned how to focus and prepare myself to get what. I also learned that flying low under the radar can be beneficial.
Umterps.com: How has Maryland swimming and diving changed since your arrival as a freshman?
BH: Maryland has changed a lot since I got here as a transfer. There have been head coaches and other staff changes. But the goal of the team has stayed the same... trying to swim as fast as you can at the end of the year.
Umterps.com: Give three reasons why a recruit would want to become a member of Maryland's swimming and diving team.
BH: The men's and women's team train together that can be hard to find at some colleges, the atmosphere is great, and the location to DC is perfect
Umterps.com: What do you plan to do after graduation?
BH: I plan to find a job. As for swimming, I will not be competing in masters.
Umterps.com: Any departing advice?
BH: Freshmen need to make friends outside of the swim team. Though it is good to have a tight group of friends it can create a lot of drama and tension.
