BLACKSBURG, Va. -
Virginia Tech held Maryland to just three hits and used a six-run second inning to take a commanding lead, ultimately defeating the Terps 13-4 Saturday in the second of a three-game series.
Virginia Tech's Steve Domecus hit a grand slam as part of the big second inning. After an error and a single gave the Hokies runners on first and second, Maryland starter Eric Potter hit Michael Seaborn with a pitch and walked Mike Kaminski to give Tech its first run. Potter then hit Andrew Rash with a pitch to plate another Virginia Tech run, and with the bases still loaded Domecus homered to make it 6-1 Hokies.
The Terps had taken a 1-0 lead in the first after leadoff hitter David Poutier reached base on a fielding error by Virginia Tech starting pitcher Jesse Hahn. Alfredo Rodriguez put down a sacrifice bunt to move Poutier to second, who later advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Matt Marquis drew a walk, Brandon Padula extended his hitting-streak to 10 games with a single that scored Poutier.
Padula and Marquis executed a double steal to get into scoring position, but third baseman Matthew Murakami and first baseman Dan Gentzler struck out to end Maryland's threat.
Maryland (6-7) scored two runs in the top of the sixth to get within 6-3, but the Hokies added insurance runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to ensure victory.
Hahn (4-0) went 7 1/3 for Virginia Tech (10-4), striking out nine while yielding three runs on two hits and three walks.
Eric Potter (1-2) was straddled with the loss, pitching two innings and giving up six runs on two hits and one walk.
The Terps and Hokies play the third and final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. RHP Sander Beck or LHP Adam Kolarek will start for Maryland, while the Hokies will send either RHP Matthew Price or LHP Joe Mantiply to the mound.
