GREENSBORO, N.C. - Track and field standout Christina Nelson was one of three Maryland athletes to be awarded the Weaver-James-Corrigan Award Monday for her success on and off the field, as well as her service to the community.
Nelson, a kinesiology major, intends to pursue a Master's degree in physical therapy. She was inducted into the Phi Alpha Epsilon Academic Honor Society in 2009. Nelson, Jennifer Collins and Hudson Taylor will each receive a $5,000 scholarship to contribute to their post graduate education.
In addition to academic achievements, Nelson's results in the 800 meters, 1,000 meters, mile and 4x800-meter relay rank her among the top ten all time in Maryland history in each event. She is an important contributor in middle-distance events and also provides valuable leadership as a senior.
The Weaver-James-Corrigan Award is named in honor of three former ACC Commissioners; the late Jim Weaver and Bob James, as well as Gene Corrigan. Each played a significant role in developing the reputation the conference holds today.
36 student-athletes are chosen each year to receive the award, three from each school within the conference. Four others were given the Weaver-James Corrigan Honorary Award. The 40 student-athletes will be honored on April 14, 2010 at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro, N.C.
