Baseball Drops Saturday Matinee with Georgia Tech

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team lost to No. 3 Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium at Shipley Field, 24-4, in the middle game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series.
The Terrapins (8-10, 2-3 ACC) got off to a good start. After a scoreless top of the first inning from starting pitcher Adam Kolarek, second baseman David Poutier belted a lead-off double to start the bottom half.
Maryland eventually pushed two runs across on a Dan Gentzler sacrifice fly and a Matthew Murakami RBI single.
However, the Yellow Jackets (15-2, 4-1 ACC) scored three or more runs in six of the next seven innings to pull away.
Mike Rozak added an RBI single for Maryland and Poutier tacked on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth to turn an 8-2 deficit to 8-4, but Georgia Tech responded with three runs in the fifth and six in the sixth.
Kolarek took his first loss of the season, evening his season record to 1-1. Kolarek allowed eight runs in 3 1/3 innings pitched. Brandon Cumpton went seven innings for the Yellow Jackets, allowing four runs on seven hits to improve to 4-0.
Leadoff hitter Jay Dantzler paced Georgia Tech's offensive attack with four hits in six at-bats with two home runs and eight RBIs.
The series concludes at 1 p.m. Sunday in the rubber game of the series.
