COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Eric Potter pitched five innings of no-hit ball, Maryland scored three runs early and led throughout in a 5-1 victory over Navy on Wednesday night.
Potter, who was on a pitch count and was removed before the start of the sixth inning, was perfect through three innings. He surrendered a walk in the fourth and fifth, but also struck out four in his best performance this season.
Leading 1-0 in the third, the Terps (11-15) created separation with a couple of key stolen bases to set up two runs. Jon Wilson drew a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a single by Brandon Padula. After Padula stole second, David Poutier laced a double to left field, scoring Wilson and Padula.
Mike Rozak hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, his first of the season, to increase Maryland's lead to 4-0.
Blair Delean relieved Potter in the sixth and surrendered just two hits in two innings, Matt Fullerton came on in the eighth and Maryland held a 5-0 lead going into the top of the ninth.
Navy (17-8) had a chance to tie the game in the ninth after Fullerton issued a leadoff walk and gave up two singles - one that scored Navy's lone run - but John Dischert came on with one out and closed the door. The senior struck out the first batter he saw, and after an infield single loaded the bases, struck out Navy third baseman Craig Veech to end the game.
Potter (2-4) got the win, while Dischert earned his first save of the season.
Navy starter Johnny Schoberl (2-3) took the loss for the Mids, who used six pitchers in the game. Schoberl pitched just one inning and gave up one run on one hit while walking two.
Maryland plays host to North Carolina in a three-game set this weekend. The Terps and Tar Heels play at 6 p.m. Friday, and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
