COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland track and field teams will head to Williamsburg, Va. this weekend to compete in the 45th Annual Colonial Relays. This will mark the second time this season that the Terrapins compete at William & Mary with the team producing eight first-place finishes at the Tribe Invitational in March.
"We are at a point now where we are fine-tuning in preparation for the ACC meet," said head coach Andrew Valmon. "This weekend should help to gauge where we are."
The Terrapins are coming off one of their strongest performances this year at the Maryland Invitational. The men's and women's programs posted a combined eleven first-place finishes. Maryland also possesses 12 marks currently in the top 48 in the East Region, temporarily qualifying those athletes for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
"With the new NCAA qualifying process, we are looking to post some marks that can be competitive within the region."
The Colonial Relays, generally considered one of the best meets on the east coast each year, will feature 35 schools, 45 All-Americans and two individual NCAA National Champions. The meet will give Maryland a chance to measure up against local competition, as well as other schools within the conference.
Some athletes to watch for are Kiani Profit in the 100-meter hurdles, Christina Nelson in the 1,500 and Moriah Young and Kristen Batts in throwing events. On the men's side, Tommy Friscia will lead Maryland in mid-distance events, Alex Lundy should be a factor in the 5,000 and Legonn Haskins will look to improve his IC4A-qualifying mark in the 110-meter hurdles.
An interesting facet about this weekend's meet is the inclusion of several unique relays. Saturday's schedule includes a 4x800 relay, distance medley relay, 4x110 shuttle hurdle relay, 4x200 relay and 4x1,500 relay. Maryland's depth should help it score points in several of these relays with the Terps' best chances likely to come in the 4x800.
