CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Maryland starting pitcher Brett Harman struck out 10 in 6 1/3 innings but Nathan Melendres' solo home run sparked a three-run fifth inning that propelled the Hurricanes to a 5-1 victory Friday night.
Maryland outhit Miami 11 to10, but left 11 runners on base and managed to score just one run.
Harman was nearly unhittable early on, striking out seven through the first four innings. Four of the first six outs he recorded were strikeouts and he surrendered just one hit in the first three frames.
But after Melendres' homer Miami recorded back-to-back singles and Harman issued his first walk of the game to load the bases. The Canes plated their second run on a wild pitch and tacked on another with Scott Lawson's sacrifice fly.
The second-ranked team in the conference in home runs, Miami added an insurance run in the seventh on Frankie Ratcliff's solo homer.
Maryland's lone run came in the fourth inning when designated hitter Gary Schneider singled to right field, scoring Matthew Murakami.
Chris Hernandez (6-2) gave up one run on eight hits in seven innings and earned the win. Miami improved to 32-11 and 16-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Harman (4-7), who surrendered four runs on eight hits, was saddled with the loss. The junior entered the game ranked third in the ACC with a 2.81 ERA in conference action and had everything going his way early. In addition to his strikeouts, he escaped the first and fourth innings by picking off runners at first base for the third out.
The bottom of Maryland's lineup provided much of the offense. Murakami, Mike Rozak and Schneider, the Terps' seven-eight-nine hitters, all had two-hit games. Leadoff hitter Alfredo Rodriguez also had a two-hit game, his 13th multiple-hit effort this season.
With the loss, Maryland fell to 15-31 and 4-18 ACC.
The Terps and Canes continue the three-game series Saturday at 7 p.m. LHP Eric Potter (2-8, 8.40) is scheduled to start for Maryland. RHP Jason Santana (3-1, 5.16), who was originally slated to start Sunday, will instead start for Miami on Saturday.
