Maryland Falls To West Virginia, 20-9

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - West Virginia tallied six runs on seven hits in the second inning to take a commanding lead and went on to defeat Maryland 20-9 Wednesday evening.
Chris Rasky led off the second with a home run to left field, and after a groundout, the Mountaineers reeled off six straight hits. Kevin Griffin, Mark Dvoroznak and Jedd Gyorko all had run-scoring doubles in the rally, as West Virginia took a 6-0 lead.
The Mountaineers added a single run in the third and two more in the fifth on a two-run home run by Gyorko to go ahead 9-1. After two scoreless innings, West Virginia added two runs in the eighth and nine more in the ninth to complete the scoring.
Matthew Murakami led Maryland (12-19) offensively, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, including a solo home run in the third inning.
The Terps managed to score seven runs over the final three innings, but with a depleted bullpen, allowed 11 runs over the final two innings.
Jack Cleary was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Anthony Perez hit a pinch-hit home run in the ninth, the first of his career, but West Virginia's 25 hits were far too much to overcome.
Dom Hayes went 5-for-7, Gyorko went 4-for-6 with six RBI and Brady Wilson went 4-for-6 to lead West Virginia (14-15).
Maryland starter Blair Delean (1-1) gave up six runs in 1 1/3 and was pegged with the loss.
Michael Twigg (1-0), who allowed four runs on five hits while striking out six in 6 2/3, earned the win for West Virginia.
Maryland travels to Chestnut Hill, Mass., this weekend for an Atlantic Coast Conference series with Boston College. The Terps and Eagles open the series Friday at 2:30 p.m.
