COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Clemson scored three unearned runs in the sixth inning to overcome a 6-4 deficit and tacked on five more in the last three innings to complete a comeback victory over Maryland, 12-8, Saturday afternoon.
Clemson's Mike Freeman led off the sixth with a single and Maryland's infield dropped two popups later in the inning, allowing the Tigers to score three runs on just two hits.
The Terps had taken an early lead with a four-run first inning, sparked by three straight singles to open the inning. Alfredo Rodriguez, Jon Wilson and Gary Schneider all had base hits to open the frame, with Rodriguez and Wilson coming home on Schneider's single to the gap between shortstop and third base.
After Matt Marquis drew a walk, Brandon Padula grounded into a fielder's choice RBI and David Poutier later grounded into a double play that brought home Schneider for a 4-2 Maryland lead.
The Tigers answered with two runs in the second inning on a pair of RBI singles from Will Lamb and Jeff Schaus, but Maryland came back with single runs in the bottom of the second and the third.
Wilson got his second hit of the game with an RBI single in the second and Matthew Murakami's sacrifice fly in the third gave the Terps a 6-4 lead, setting the stage for the decisive sixth inning.
Clemson's Kyle Parker had an RBI double in the seventh, while Schaus and John Hinson had home runs in the ninth to pad the Tigers' lead.
Kevin Tehansky had a pinch-hit double in the seventh, stole third and scored on Zach Fisher's sacrifice fly to bring Maryland within two, but Clemson's ninth-inning home runs extended its lead to five.
Clemson reliever Alex Frederick (4-1) went five innings and gave up two runs on six hits to get the win.
John Dischert (0-1), who came on in relief of starter Eric Potter, gave up five runs, just two of them earned, in the loss.
Prior to the game, Maryland Athletics dedicated the baseball stadium - named Shipley Field at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium - to Bob Smith. Smith is a Maryland baseball alumnus and also established the Bob "Turtle" Smith and Carol B. Smith Family Endowed Scholarship, Maryland's first fully-endowed baseball scholarship.
Maryland and Clemson play the third and final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. The Terps will honor nine seniors prior to the game as part of Senior Day festivities.
