Angela Tincher Hired As Pitching Coach

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland softball head coach Laura Watten announced the hiring of former USA Softball Player of the Year Angela Tincher as a new assistant coach Wednesday. Tincher, the 2008 USA Softball Player of the Year and three-time ACC Player of the Year, will work with the Terrapin pitching staff.
"I am very excited to be adding Angela to our coaching staff. Not only has she proven to be one of the best pitchers in softball on all levels of the game, she is also an excellent teacher and instructor," Watten said.
Most recently, Tincher spent the 2009 season working with Syracuse's pitching staff. She helped lead the Orange to a Big East title and an appearance in NCAA Regionals.
"I'm really excited to get back to the ACC, which is where I played and the league I am familiar with," Tincher said. "I am excited to work with Maryland's pitchers, both returning and incoming, especially after seeing them in NCAA Regionals in May. This is a great staff to work with and it's exciting to be at such a great school."
A 2008 graduate of Virginia Tech, Tincher led the Hokies to their first-ever College World Series appearance in 2008 and was the recipient of the Lowe's Senior Class award. She was twice named a First Team All-American. During her senior season, she recorded a no-hitter against the USA Olympic Softball team, which ended Team USA's 185-game pre-Olympic win streak.
She was a 2008 finalist for the ESPY award honoring the College Female Athlete of the Year and one of five finalists for the Honda-Broderick Cup, which is awarded to the NCAA's top female athlete. She won a gold medal at the 2006 World University Games in Taiwan.
In her years as a Hokie, she compiled a 123-35 record and carried an ERA of 0.78. She ranks third in the NCAA record books with 2,149 career strikeouts, including 120 double-digit strikeout appearances. Tincher threw 14 no-hitters - including a pair of perfect games.
Upon graduation, she was drafted in the first round by the National Pro Fastpitch's Akron Racers. She also plays for Leopalace 21 of the Japan Professional League.
