2010-11 WBB Schedule | Nov. Release | Dec. and Jan. Release
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The remainder of the Maryland women's basketball schedule was released at noon today by the Atlantic Coast Conference office. At least six games are slated for television, with matchups against North Carolina and Florida State on ESPN2.
This is the third-most appearances and television games to start the season in ACC women's basketball history, 45 games and 82 appearances (1st in 2007-08, 52 games and 90 appearances and 2nd in 2006-07, 47 games and 84 appearances). Also being picked up by the Big Ten Network are four games during the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Maryland's game vs. Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind., is included in that list.
Head coach Brenda Frese and the Terrapins are back and reloaded with a team of young talent and no seniors. Maryland returns four starters in juniors Kim Rodgers and Lynetta Kizer and sophomores Dara Taylor and Diandra Tchatchouang. Not to mention sophomore Tianna Hawkins and junior Anjale Barrett who stellar off the bench last season. Add one of the nation's top recruiting classes to the mix and you have a tough, athletic and determined group of athletes.
DON'T FORGET fans can order season tickets now at umterps.com! Terps fans can also get their ticket packages for the First and Second Rounds of the 2011 NCAA Tournament hosted right here at Comcast Center Sunday, March 20 and Tuesday, March 22.
Following a solid non-conference schedule with teams such as Georgetown, Purdue and St. John's, Maryland starts league play on the road in Durham, N.C., at Duke on Jan. 6. It will be the first of four games televised by Raycom Sports Network (RSN).
The Terps faced the top-10 Blue Devils three times during the 2009-10 season, with two of the games decided by two points or less. Duke has three senior starters returning in All-American Jasmine Thomas, Krystal Thomas and Karima Christmas. They also add a top recruiting class which includes Chelsea Gray, Richa Jackson, Haley Peters, Tricia Liston and Chloe Wells. Peters is a familiar face to Maryland freshman Laurin Mincy. Both are from New Jersey and played high school basketball against each other.
Maryland's home opener is against Boston College on Thursday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. The Terrapins also end the season with the Eagles on Feb. 27 in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The Terps split with BC last year, first claiming a 72-65 victory in College Park and dropping an 83-70 decision on the road. The Eagles have four returners led by seniors Stefanie Murphy and Carolyn Swords who averaged 14.5 and 13.7 points per game, respectively.
The trip home is short as the Terrapins return to the road for a Sunday game against Clemson on Jan. 16 and another road contest vs. Virginia on Friday, Jan. 21. The Terps defeated the Tigers 71-51 during the WBCA Pink Zone game in Comcast Center. This year Clemson has a new face with first-year head coach Itoro Coleman. Last time Maryland visited UVA the Terrapins produced a last second defensive play which shut down All-American Monica Wright, giving the Terps the 61-60 win. Virginia returns to Comcast Center this season as well on Sunday, Feb. 13 at 2 p.m.
Maryland returns home for a three-game home stand. Sunday, Jan. 23 pits the Terps against North Carolina, whom they knocked out of the ACC Tournament in the first round last year. It was the first year UNC didn't advance from the first round. ESPN2 will be on hand to broadcast the always exciting match-up at 5 p.m.
The following weekend is another televised event (RSN) as Maryland takes on Wake Forest, Jan. 28 at 8:30 p.m. In the previous season Coach Frese earned her 250th career victory while defeating the Demon Deacons in Winston-Salem, 70-65. A break from non-conference play has the Terps hosting Longwood that Sunday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m.
Kicking things off in February, the last month before post season play begins, is a road game in Atlanta, Ga., at Georgia Tech on Feb. 3. Maryland owns the all-time record against the Jackets, 42-17, and 14-12 in Atlanta.
Back in College Park the Terrapins face N.C. State on Feb. 6 at noon. The Wolfpack advanced to the NCAA tournament last season under first-year head coach Kellie Harper. They are also led by Freshman All-American and ACC Rookie of the Year Marissa Kastanek.
A Thursday game in Coral Gables, Fla., has the Terps facing Miami on Feb. 10. Maryland fell in last year's game after a wild, last second shot was made by junior Riquna Williams.
The Terrapins make the trip back home for games against Virginia (Feb. 13 at 2 p.m.) and Duke (Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m.).
Closing out February is a road match-up at Florida State on Feb. 20, home game vs. Virginia Tech on Feb. 24 and a road trip to Boston College on Feb. 27. FSU advanced further into the NCAA Tournament than any other Seminole team had before them. The `Noles were led by graduate Jacinta Monroe in the Elite Eight, but Florida State succumbed to NCAA Champion Connecticut.
What would be senior night, the last home game of the season, will be played against the Hokies. However, without any seniors to send off, the Terps will be focuses on the post season and giving their home crowd an outstanding performance before attending the 2011 ACC Tournament. Maryland defeated VT last year 60-44 in Blacksburg, Va. BC will mark the last regular season game for the Terps before the ACC tournament March 3-6.
