Storyline

Maryland returns home to Comcast Center after a difficult three-game road swing that included games against the No. 1 and No. 7 teams in the nation. The home game upon the return is no easy one, as Virginia Tech comes to College Park having won seven of its last eight.

The Terrapins' six losses this season have come by a combined 35 points, and all were two-possession games down the stretch. Five have come against teams ranked in the Top 25 at the start of the season and the sixth came to a Boston College team that is now 3-1 and tied atop the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Sophomore center Jordan Williams earned his 15th double-double of the season and his 11th straight last Saturday against No. 7 Villanova. Williams scored 25 points and had 14 rebounds against the Wildcats, including a 10-for-14 performance from the floor. Only Len Elmore (12 straight to end the 1973-74 season) has more consecutive double-doubles at Maryland.

Williams needs only nine rebounds to become the 39th Terrapin in history with 500 career rebounds. He carries a 9.8 rebounds per game average in his 50 career appearances as a Terrapin.

Maryland has been one of the nation's top defensive teams of late. The Terrapins come into Thursday's game ranked sixth in the nation in field goal percentage defense. The Terps' last six opponents (Terps are 4-2 with losses only to then-No. 1 Duke and No. 7 Villanova) are shooting .348 from the floor and .291 from 3-point range.

Senior guard Adrian Bowie has played well offensively since his move from the point guard spot. Bowie is averaging 10.3 points per game over the last eight games and has hit 10 of 25 shots from 3-point range in that stretch. Bowie has also taken care of the ball, committing only 12 turnovers in the last 11 games (3.58 assist-turnover ratio).

The game with Virginia Tech is the first in a home-and-home series with the Hokies this season. Maryland returns the home game in Blacksburg on Feb. 15, returning to the site of last season's classic 104-100 double-overtime win by the Terps.

Scouting the Hokies

The Hokies have won seven of their last eight games and are led by All-ACC senior guard Malcolm Delaney, who ranks third in the conference in scoring at 18.6 ppg... Tech's lone loss over the last month-plus was a 64-61 setback at North Carolina on Jan. 13... The Hokies are 11-5 and 2-2 in conference play on the season...

Tech is coming off a 94-65 win over Wake Forest in which Delaney dished out nine assists and reserve Manny Atkins scored a career-high 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting... Although Delaney had just nine points against the Demon Deacons, he had 28 in the loss to North Carolina while hitting 7 of 12 3-pointers... Delaney's .433 mark from 3-point range ranks third in the ACC and his 4.4 apg are fourth...

Delaney, along with a frontcourt triumvirate of forwards Jeff Allen, Terrell Bell and Victor Davila, has started every game this season... Sophomore guard Erick Green has started the last eight games alongside Delaney, replacing senior Dorenzo Hudson who was lost for the year to a foot injury... Green has scored in double figures in each of his eight starts and leads the team with 28 steals...

Allen's 9.3 rpg lead the team and rank third in the ACC, and the 6-foot-7 senior is also averaging 12.6 ppg... Davila, a junior from Puerto Rico, is shooting a team-high 60.8 percent from the field, averaging 7.1 ppg and 5.1 rpg... The Hokies' scoring margin over the last eight games is plus-20.4 points.

On Jordan Williams

Williams was one of eight sophomores, as well as eight players from the ACC listed on the preseason top 50 for the Wooden Award... Recently, Williams was included in the Wooden Award's midseason top 30... Athlon's preseason magazine listed Williams fourth on its list of post players nationally and as an honorable mention preseason All-American.

A little research from the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association... Williams has double-doubles in 88.2 percent of his games this season (15 of 17)... That rate has been surpassed in the ACC only by Tim Duncan of Wake Forest (.935, 29x31, 1997) and Ronnie Shavlik of NC State (.893, 25x28, 1956).

Williams is averaging 9.8 rebounds per game over his 50-game career at Maryland... He has 491 career rebounds in the middle of his sophomore season... He is closing on becoming the 39th Terrapin in history with at least 500 career boards.
