ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The University of Maryland gymnastics team placed third in its first quad meet of the season at the University of Michigan Saturday night by scoring 193.800. The host Wolverines won the meet, totaling a 195.875. Kent State finished second with a 194.675, while Illinois-Chicago placed fourth with a 189.875.
"I thought the team did a great job again this week stepping up and filling some spots in our lineup," said head coach Brett Nelligan. "It is a good sign that this team can go out and hit 23 of 24 routines on the road in a pressure packed arena this early in the year."
The Terps began competition on the uneven bars with Kesley Cofsky securing Maryland's first 9.800 of the night. Kaitlin Joseph and Ally Krikorian each brought in scores of 9.700 to keep the Terrapins within striking distance.
Abigail Adams led the Terrapins on balance beam, earning a 9.800 while Jenn Iovino received a score of 9.700.
On floor exercise, Maryland earned the second-best team score with a 48.775, behind just Michigan's 49.150. Adams and Katy Dodds both received marks of 9.825 on the floor, followed by Kyra Phillips' 9.750 and Cofsky's 9.725.
"Kesley had a great bar performance tonight and Abbey really shined on beam and floor," said Nelligan. "They have been solid competitors for us so far this year. Freshman Katy Dodds continues to impress us more and more each week. She has a great future ahead of her as a Terp."
On vault, Dodds led with a 9.750 while Phillips and Adams brought in scores of 9.700 and 9.675, respectively.
Michigan's Kylee Botterman earned top-honors in the all-around competition by winning three of four events while Adams finished a close second with 38.975 over four events. Cofsky finished in seventh at 38.275.
"Tonight's meet gives us confidence heading into next week," said Nelligan. "If we can hit under these tough conditions, we can do it anywhere."
Maryland resumes conference play against North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. Last season, the Terps split with the Tar Heels as each team earned a win on the road.
