Gymnastics Announces 2011-12 Schedule

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland gymnastics coach Brett Nelligan announced today the schedule for the 2011-12 season which features 12 meets including three teams that finished the 2010-11 season ranked in the top 15 nationally.

The Terps scheduled is highlighted by a trip Gainesville, Fla., to face SEC powerhouses Florida and Arkansas. Both the Gators and Razorbacks finished the season ranked in the top 10. Maryland will also meet Penn State twice. The Nittany Lions were ranked No. 14 at the end of last season.

"We have an exciting schedule this year," said Nelligan. "It's a really strong mix of conference and non-conference opponents. We'll get a real sense of where we stand across the nation. The team has already been training hard in the gym and we're looking forward to getting this season started."

Maryland opens the season Friday, Dec. 9 with the annual Red vs. Black Intrasquad meet. Following winter break, the Terps travel to West Virginia for a tri-meet with the Mountaineers and Penn State Sunday, Jan. 12. Five days later, the Terps host their first meet of the season when conference foe Pittsburgh visits Comcast.

Friday, Jan. 20 the University of Alaska-Anchorage travels across the country to take on the Terps and Bridgeport. Maryland finishes the January schedule on the 27th with a tri-meet at Florida against the Gators and Arkansas Razorbacks.

On the 5th of February, Maryland hosts two-time defending East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) champion North Carolina and Bowling Green State. The Terps will travel to Tobacco Road five days later to face the Tar Heels once again.

West Virginia, Rutgers and William and Mary come to Maryland Saturday, Feb. 18 and the Terps conclude the month with a trip to San Jose State to take on the Spartans and California Friday, Feb. 24.

The Terps open March with a tri-meet against Bridgeport and New Hampshire on the 3rd in Durham, N.H. Maryland's final home meet is Sat., March 11 against Bridgeport and Pennsylvania, and the Terps conclude the regular season against Penn State in University Park, Pa., Saturday, March 17.

The EAGL Championships are Saturday, March 24 and will be hosted by the University of Pittsburgh. NCAA competition begins Saturday, April 7 with the NCAA Regionals and concludes with the NCAA Championships Friday, April 20.
