COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The No. 10 Maryland women's basketball team took care of business Tuesday night with its 82-36 exhibition win over Messiah Tuesday night at the Comcast Center.
Laurin Mincy led the Terps with 17 points, as she went 5-for-7 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Tianna Hawkins added 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Alyssa Thomas notched 13 points and Anjale Barrett had 10.
On the defensive end, the Terrapins combined for 17 steals and Thomas accounted for seven.
"It was a good beginning point for where we are in the season," head coach Brenda Frese said. "It's good to see where we're at. There obviously some things there that we need to improve on but this was a good measuring stick for us in terms of being able to see where we've been the past couple of weeks with practice."
The Terrapins held the Falcons, who are ranked No. 23 in the Division III Coaches' poll, scoreless through the first four minutes of play, when they opened an 8-2 lead before the first official timeout.
A layup by Alicia DeVaughn gave Maryland a 20-5 lead with 9:22 left in the first half. Two made free throws by Mincy made the score 30-13 with just over four minutes left in the half and Maryland expanded that lead to 40-15 by the break.
The Terps picked up where they left off coming out of halftime, by taking a 33 point lead three minutes into the half with a jumper made by freshman Brene Moseley.
A trey made by Mincy with 10:32 remaining in the game pushed the score to 62-28. The Terrapins held the Falcons to just six points in the final 14 minutes.
Maryland beat Messiah inside with 42 points in the paint to the Falcons' 10. They scored 33 points off Messiah's 29 turnovers and 22 fastbreak points. Messiah had just two. The Terps got 26 points from their bench, as nine players scored.
One of the nation's leading rebounding teams a year ago, the Terps outrebounded the Falcons, 47-32.
Mincy added three blocks and Moseley dished seven assists.
The Terrapins are ranked tenth in the USA Today/ESPN Division I Top 25 Preseason Coaches' poll, released Tuesday, and are No. 11 in the Associated Press rankings.
Next, the Terps will play host to Holy Family at 7 p.m. Sunday in their final exhibition game. They open the regular season when they welcome Loyola (Md.) to College Park for a 7 p.m. game on Nov. 11. For tickets, log on to the Terrapin Ticket Office online at umterps.com or call 1-800-IM-A-TERP.
