Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening Statement:
"It was a good beginning point for where we are in the season; it's good to see where we're at. There are obviously some things there that we need to improve on, but this was a good measuring stick for us in terms of being able to see where we've been the past couple of weeks with practice."
On measuring the team's ability so far:
"We'll watch the film and see the areas where we feel like need the improvements. Today it was the offensive rebounds and some other statistics that jump out at you that we will work on once we get back together with the team. We'll go back and watch the film, break it down and find the areas that we can teach for us to be better."
On team continuity:
"Obviously, this year we have more depth and improvements when you talk about Laurin [Mincy]. She is now back 100 percent coming off of the injured ACL last season. You're seeing players who have come back, and we are confident that we can improve. When you look at Tianna [Hawkins] and the summer she had, she has made strides and has really become a consistent player. I think it will be nice when we have a different weapon every game and a consistent defense. I think we can be pretty good."
On assessment of Messiah:
"I thought they were very well coached and very scrappy. I think that they were hard-nosed and they competed for the full forty minutes. I think that they will go far and that they did a tremendous job. Specifically, when they were lacking size inside, where we had the advantage, they had `14 offensive rebounds. Those are straight hustle plays. Their ability to force us into 20 turnovers, I see a lot of great things for Messiah."
Sophomore Forward Alyssa Thomas
On chemistry with Brene Moseley
"Brene [Moseley] is a great player. Not only does she have good chemistry with me, but she has great chemistry with everyone on the team."
Sophomore Guard Laurin Mincy
On her offensive aggressiveness:
"I wouldn't say I am fully focused on the offense side, but I am trying to be aggressive all around, whether it's on defense or offense."
On her increased confidence when shooting
"My teammates have really given me more confidence when taking outside shots. If I am open to take a shot I am going to. That's basically what I am focused on doing."
Junior Forward Tianna Hawkins
On confidence in shots:
"I spent the summer working with my shot and I think I was pretty confident when taking the 3-pointer."
On her performance down low:
"That's a big emphasis with us and our size. We need to make sure we hit the boards and stay aggressive because that's my job."
