Terps Fall on First Day of ITA Nationals

FLUSHING, N.Y. - On the opening day of the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (USTA/ITA) National Indoor Collegiate Championships, sophomore Cristina Stancu lost to fourth-ranked Denise Dye of Washington and the doubles team of junior Ana Belzunce and sophomore Welma Luus fell to Marie-Pier Huet and Whitney Ritchie of Oklahoma Thursday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
After dropping the first set 6-3, Stancu rebounded to win the second set 6-4 before losing the third set 6-0. In the doubles draw, Belzunce and Luus led early before Huet and Ritchie rallied to win the match 8-6.
The Terps begin consolation draw play Friday morning with Belzunce and Luus in action while Stancu faces Michigan's Emina Bektas at 4:30 p.m.
