BLACKSBURG, Va. - The No. 57 Terps fought hard but ultimately fell just short, dropping a tough road match to the Hokies 4-3 in Blacksburg Saturday afternoon.
Maryland (5-2, 0-2 ACC) had a chance to win going into the final two matches, but Virginia Tech (2-4, 1-1 ACC) fought hard and knocked off the Terps.
After dropping the doubles point, the Terps gave themselves a chance to win, getting the match to 3-2. But the Terps comeback chance was thwarted when the Hokies' Tea Ivanovic took Maryland senior Julia Huschke to a third set beating Huscke 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 and giving Virginia Tech their fourth point and the victory.
Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar continued her perfect season thus far, notching her first victory at No. 1 singles 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 over Virginia Tech's Yasmin Hamza. She and Jordaan Sanford also grabbed another victory at No. 1 doubles knocking off Hamza and Holly Johnson 8-5. Sanchez-Quintanar improved to 7-0, while the doubles team of Sanford and Sanchez-Quintanar improved to 7-0 as well.
Ana Belzunce also remained unbeaten in seven singles matches this season, scoring Maryland's first point of the day with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over the Hokies' Johnson.
The Terps also got a big singles performance from Sanford whose 7-5, 6-4 win over Martha Blakely gave Maryland a chance going into the final two matches. Sanford is now 5-2 this season.
Up next Maryland heads back to College Park for three matches next weekend. Friday the Terps will take on Columbia at 1 p.m. before playing a doubleheader Saturday versus California (Pa.) at 10 a.m. and Delaware at 3 p.m. All matches will take place at the Tennis Center at College Park.
