COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland softball team will head south to Boca Raton, Fla. this weekend to compete in the Strike Out Cancer Tournament, hosted by Florida Atlantic University. The Terrapins (2-3) will play five games in three days, beginning Friday morning and ending Sunday.
Maryland will kick off the tournament on Friday against Pittsburgh (12-1) at 9 a.m. The Terps are tied with the Panthers 2-2 in the all-time series after Maryland topped Pittsburgh 4-3 in extra innings last season.
The Terps will return to the field at 1 p.m. Friday to take on Kent State (3-6). The Golden Flashes and Terrapins have not met since 1996 when Maryland defeated Kent State 4-3.
In the team's third game of the weekend, Maryland will square off against Connecticut (0-0) at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The Terrapins and Huskies are tied 1-1 in the all-time series, though the teams have not faced each other in 10 years.
Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., the Terps will go up against Jacksonville (8-4) for the first meeting between the two teams.
Maryland will round out the weekend tournament on Sunday.
Head coach Laura Watten and the Terps started the 2011 season at last weekend's Red & Black Showcase, hosted by the University of Georgia. Maryland finished at 2-3 in the tournament with wins against Lipscomb and East Carolina.
At third base, junior Bree Hanafin leads the Maryland offensive attack on the short season with a .500 batting average and eight total bases.
Freshman pitcher Ashley Czechner boasts team highs in both strikeouts (15) and ERA (3.09). The Pawleys Island, S.C., native earned her first complete game in Maryland's 4-3 win over Lipscomb on Feb. 12.
