BLACKSBURG, Va. - All-Americans Kiani Profit and Dwight Barbiasz will lead the Maryland track and field teams this weekend at the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships being hosted by Virginia Tech.
Action at the meet begins on Thursday with the combined events, where Profit hopes to take center stage. The championships will wrap up on Saturday afternoon.
Profit owns the school record in the women's pentathlon, scoring 4,242 points when she placed second at the NCAA Indoor Nationals. She also placed second at the ACC Indoor meet a year ago, but comes into this year's league meet as the top seed after already hitting an automatic-qualifying mark for the NCAAs.
She currently ranks fifth nationally with her 4,109 total set in late January at the Penn State National Invitational.
Barbiasz tied his career-best earlier this season in the men's high jump at 7 feet, 3-1/4 inches. The junior also is the top seed for the ACC Indoor Championship and is tied for eighth nationally. He earned All-America honors at the 2009 NCAA Indoor meet by tying for third. Barbiasz won the ACC Indoor meet as a freshman.
Terrapin freshman Amina Smith has finished first in the women's high jump in each of her five meets so far this year. Smith has a season-best of 5-10 that she has hit three times, currently the third-best mark of the year in the league.
Other Terrapins to watch this weekend include distance runner Greg Kelsey, who is seeded fourth in the men's 5,000 meters; Jon Hill, whose high jump of 7-0.25 also ranks fourth in the ACC; and freshman thrower Josh Haghighi, who is ranked in the shot put.
For the Maryland women, sprinter DeAnna Brown is ranked at 60 meters, while throwers Moriah Young and Kristen Batts have been strong so far this season.
