BLACKSBURG, Va. - Kiani Profit broke her own University of Maryland school record in winning the women's pentathlon Thursday at the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Virginia Tech.
Profit scored 4,250 points in the five-event competition that spanned the entire day. Her mark broke the 4,242 she posted last year at the NCAA Indoor Nationals. Profit earned the individual title in the pentathlon after placing second last year.
Ariel Roberts of North Carolina was second in the competition with 3,916 points, with Clemson's Whitney Fountain finishing third at 3,798.
Profit won the 60-meter hurdles (8.54 seconds), long jump (19 feet, 0.50 inches) and the 800-meter run in the 14-athlete field. Her mark of 2:10.81 in the 800 was a personal best and moved her into third place on Maryland's all-time list in the event.
Profit also set a career-best in the shot put, with her mark of 39-10 being 2-1/2 feet better than her previous collegiate-best in the event. She finished second in the shot on Thursday.
She was third in Thursday's competition in the high jump at 5-6.
Profit's mark of 4,250 in the pentathlon ranks third among collegiate competitors nationally so far this season. Oregon junior Brianne Theisen has the NCAA's best mark at 4,507 this season.
Profit's 10 points for the victory puts Maryland atop the women's team standings with Clemson. The pentathlon is the only event completed in the three-day championship meet.
She will compete individually on Friday in the women's long jump competition. Also highlighting Maryland's entries on Friday will be Dwight Barbiasz and Jon Hill in the men's high jump, Greg Kelsey in the men's 5,000 and Moriah Young, Kristen Batts and Jessie Echard in the women's weight throw.
The ACC Indoor Championships will end on Saturday.
