ATLANTA - Andrew Relihan finished third in the 200 back to lead Maryland in the final day of the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championship Saturday.
Relihan, a junior, landed on the podium for the second time in his Maryland career, taking third in the 200 back with an NCAA B-cut qualifying time of 1:44.60. Freshman Matt Meserole also provided the Terps with points in the event, finishing 16th (1:48.17).
Senior Mitch Challacombe wrapped up his final ACC Championship meet with an 11th place finish in the 100 free (44.14), another B-cut mark for the captain.
Junior Sean Stewart and senior Roger Dent went 9-10 in the 200 fly, with B-cut times of 1:46.63 and 1:46.87, respectively.
Freshman Alex Spina led Maryland in the grueling 1650 free, finishing 19th (15:55.44). Fellow classmate Colin Stang paced the Terps in the 200 breast, also taking 19th (2:03.36).
Maryland finished the meet with a seventh-place showing in the 400 free relay, with the team of Challacombe, John Hauser, Relihan, and Jeff Winters finishing with a B-cut mark (2:57.85). Saturday night's performance shaved nearly five seconds off the Terps' qualifying time and established a new school record.
N.C. State edged Maryland by 16 points for the eighth spot in this year's championship. Virginia won its fourth consecutive crown.
