WEYMOUTH, Mass. -
The Terps fell just short Friday afternoon, losing their first match of the season, and ACC opener at Boston College.
Maryland (3-1, 0-1 ACC) fought hard against the Eagles (2-1, 1-0 ACC) but ultimately fell just inches short. The Terps and Eagles split singles competition, each grabbing three wins apiece. But a tiebreaking final game at No. 2 doubles was ultimately what cost Maryland the match.
After battling to an 8-8 tie at No. 2 doubles Terp veterans Julia Huschke and Jordan Hansbrough lost in tiebreaks 7-4 to Boston College's Haley Dixon and Veronica Corning, costing the Terps the doubles point and the match.
Junior transfer Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar continued her dominance this season, staying undefeated in both singles and doubles through four matches. Sanchez-Quintanar and Jordaan Sanford helped the Terps stay in it early scoring an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles against the Eagles' Alex Kelleher and Olga Khmylev.
Sanchez-Quintanar also stayed hot in singles rolling off a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) victory at No. 3 singles against Corning.
Maryland newcomers continued to rack up wins for the Terps. Junior transfer Ana Belzunce and freshman Welma Luus both scored single's wins to keep the Terps alive.
At. No. 2 singles Belzunce knocked off Boston College's Katharine Attwell 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. While Luus came back again from down one set at No. 6 to defeat Dixon 0-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The road does not get any easier for Maryland as they play three more consecutively on the road, against two ranked opponents, and another ACC foe. Saturday night the Terps travel to Providence R.I. to take on No. 64 Brown at 9 p.m.
