SKILLMAN, N.J. -
Strong recent play by both the men's and women's tennis teams have catapulted them up the national polls.
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings were released Tuesday with the women jumping from No. 58 to 43rd and the men leaping from No. 63 to 45th in the team standings.
For the women it's their highest ranking since February, 2007 when the Terps were 33rd nationally. The men haven't been this high in the ITA team standings since March, 2007 (also No. 45).
The Terrapin men also have four players in the individual rankings. Maros Horny is No. 72 and Sergio Wyss is No. 111 in the ITA singles list, while the tandem of John Collins and Tommy Laine is 56th in the doubles rankings.
The Maryland women do not have a ranked singles player or doubles duo, but Ana Belzunce is a perfect 10-0 in dual singles and Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar is 9-0.
Both teams will put their rankings on the line this week.
The Maryland men head to Corpus Christi, Texas, Friday for the HEB Tournament of Champions. New Mexico, BYU, Purdue, DePaul, Western Michigan, Middle Tennessee State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi are scheduled to compete in the two-day event.
The Terp women will play host to No. 56 Princeton at 11 a.m. Saturday.
