COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland gymnastics team placed 10 gymnasts on the 2011 East Atlantic Gymnastics League All-Academic team, the league announced Monday.
“I'm extremely proud of this team's academic achievements,” said head coach Brett Nelligan. “Sometimes people forget how hard it is to be both a student and an athlete. These young women work as hard in the gym as they do in the classroom.”
The Terrapins' academic honorees were led by seniors Abigail Adams, Jennifer Iovino and Kaitlin Joseph, all of whom earned EAGL All-Academic team honors in each and every season while at Maryland.
Junior Becca Pang, sophomores Kesley Cofsky and Briana Melander and freshmen Jessie Black, Katy Dodds, Elizabethe Manzi and Karen Tang also earned academic team selections based on their success in the classroom.
In order to be named to the EAGL All-Academic team, student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Freshmen are eligible if they earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the fall semester.
The Terps will seek more conference honors on Friday at the EAGL Banquet followed by the league championship on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Charles E. Smith Center in Washington, D.C.
