Carroll's Four HR's Power Terps Past Cavs

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Sophomore Lexi Carroll's four home runs led the Maryland softball team to two wins at Virginia Saturday. The Terps (22-9, 2-0 ACC) opened their Atlantic Coast Conference slate with 13-0 and 7-0 wins in Charlottesville.

Junior Vangie Galindo went 6-for-7 at the plate and freshman Candice Beards went 3-for-4 with a home run. Sophomore Nikki Maier also hit two home runs.

Senior Kerry Hickey, the reigning ACC Pitcher of the Week, started game one in the circle for the Terps, who are riding a 13-game win streak. She did not allow the Cavaliers a hit until the bottom of the fourth and gave up just two in her five innings of work.

Maryland jumped on the board with four runs in the top of the first. Galindo and junior Bree Hanafin led off with back-to-back singles. Hickey hit an RBI single to score Galindo and senior Marisha Branson sent in Hanafin with a fielder's choice. Maier hit an RBI base hit to bring in two more runs before the end of the inning.

The Terps added three more in the top of the second. Galindo got on with another base hit. She advanced when Hanafin got on with a walk and scored on a dropped fly by the Cavaliers. Freshman Amanda McCann scored on a wild pitch and Branson singled to bring in the third run.

Branson led off the top of the fourth with a single to left then Carroll hit her first home run of the day. Two batters later, Maier hit her first as well for a 10-0 Terps lead. In the top of the fifth, with two outs and two runners on, Carroll sent a three-run home run to left to finalize the score at 13-0.

Carroll got the Terrapins on the board in the top of the second inning of game two. She led off with a solo home run. Maier hit her second home run of the day to lead off the top of the fourth that put Maryland up 2-0.

In the top of the fifth, Galindo led off with a single and Hanafin then sent a two-run homer over the wall for a 4-0 Terps lead.

Carroll hit her fourth home run of the day with a runner on and one out in the top of the seventh. Beards' followed with her solo shot to finalize the score at 7-0.

Junior Kendra Knight started in the circle for the Terrapins in the second game. She gave up just three hits in her 7.0 innings of work. She notched 10 strikeouts.
