ORLANDO, Fla. -
The Maryland softball team closed out its weekend series in the Citrus Classic at Disney's Wide World Sports Sunday with a 1-0 win over Temple.
Freshman Ashley Czechner threw a complete game shutout and senior Marisha Branson drove in the winning run for the Terps (8-7) in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Czechner pitched all 7.0 innings for the Terrapins, notching 10 strikeouts and giving up just one hit and one walk.
At the plate, the Terrapins had five hits and one walk on the day. Junior Bree Hanafin had a hit, a walk and reached on an error.
In the bottom of the sixth, Hanafin led off with a base hit. Junior Kerry Hickey advanced her on a ground ball. Branson brought her home with an RBI base hit.
Stats and a box score from Sunday's game were not available.
Junior Vangie Galindo led the Terrapins at the plate over the weekend, as she hit .674 (11 for 17) with five runs scored and a double.
In her 15.0 innings in the circle, Hickey racked up 23 strikeouts and gave up four earned runs.
The Terps will open their home season at Robert E. Taylor Stadium Wednesday when they play host to East Carolina. The Terrapins and the Pirates will play a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
