COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland softball team welcomes East Carolina in its home opener at Robert E. Taylor Stadium. At 8-7 on the season, the Terps have won four of their last seven games and will look to add to their winning ways in a doubleheader schedule for 5 p.m.
Junior Bree Hanafin leads the Terrapins offensively with 15 hits, 11 RBI, four home runs and a .417 batting average. The Arlington, Va., native also boasts team highs in slugging percentage (.806) and on-base percentage (.475).
After finishing last season with the league's sixth-most strikeouts (218), senior Kerry Hickey leads the Terrapins in 2011 with 50 over 11 appearances. Junior Kendra Knight, who led the Terps last season with 251 strikeouts, is second with 46 and first on the team with a 2.88 ERA.
At 16-5, the Pirates have won 12 of their last 13 including their last three at the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
East Carolina is led by Rebecca Lee, whose 16 walks, .410 batting average and .582 on-base percentage are all team highs. With an 11-3 record, Toni Paisley leads the Pirates with 127 strikeouts and 1.38 ERA.
