
Czechner Named Co-ACC Pitcher of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Freshman Ashley Czechner of the Maryland softball team was named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Co-Pitcher of the Week the league announced Tuesday for her performance in the Terps' 5-0 week beginning last Wednesday. She was honored with the weekly award for the first time in her career.
Czechner finished the week with a 3-0 mark, helping Maryland (27-12, 5-3 ACC) win five straight games. She did not give up a run or a walk in 11.0 innings in the circle. The 35 batters that faced her hit just .086 against her.
The Pawleys Island, S.C., right-hander opened the week against Georgetown, striking out seven in 5.0 innings. In the top of the fifth, she gave up a double to the leadoff hitter, but bounced back to get the next three batters out on strikes.
She twice came into games in the relief role in the Terps' series vs. ACC opponent Boston College over the weekend. In the second game Saturday, she came on with a runner on first and no outs in the top of the sixth inning and the game tied at three. She got the next three batters out, including two with strikeouts, to hold the Eagles.
Czechner came on in the series finale Sunday with the game tied at three in the top of the seventh inning. She allowed just one hit in 4.0 innings, a leadoff single in the eighth, but came back to get the next three Eagles on strikes.
She shares the weekly honor with Florida State's Sarah Hamilton.
The Terrapins will play host to ACC opponent North Carolina State this weekend. The Terps and the Wolfpack (18-19, 3-9 ACC) will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free for all games. The second game Saturday and Sunday's game will be shown online on TerpsTV Premium.
