RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 33 NC State picked up wins at the top three singles spots, including a match-clinching victory by Tatiana Illova at the No. 3 position, to upend the 30th-ranked Maryland women's tennis team, 5-2, Saturday afternoon in the regular-season finale for the Terps.
Illova downed Ana Belzunce 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 and the Wolfpack (10-13, 2-9) also picked up a key win from the 30th-ranked player in the nation, Sanaa Bhambri, who defeated Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar (No. 31 in the country) 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
The Terps (13-8, 3-8) won two of the three doubles matches and picked up another point at No. 5 singles when NC State's Lenka Hojckova fell to Cristina Stancu 7-6 (7-1), 3-2 ret.
"Today's match was disappointing in so far as the result is concerned, but it's clear to me we have a very formidable team that will be awfully difficult to deal with in the postseason," said Maryland head coach Howard Joffe. "I'm very proud of the entire group which has achieved and handled themselves way beyond any reasonable expectation."
Maryland will await its seeding for the ACC Championship which begins Thursday in Cary, N.C.
