Freshman right-hander Brady Kirkpatrick held Miami to one run in seven innings and fellow frosh Austin Kilbourne went 2-for-4 with five RBI as Maryland defeated Miami 10-2 in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
The Terps (17-19, 4-13) held a slim 3-1 lead when Kirkpatrick finished the top of the seventh, and broke it open with three runs in the bottom of the inning and four more in the eighth.
Kirkpatrick, who pitched exclusively in relief since a start at Texas during the opening weekend of the season, made a smooth move into the weekend rotation, spreading out five hits and striking out six to improve to 2-1.
Kilbourne, meanwhile, helped Maryland expand its lead with a RBI sacrifice fly in the seventh and a two-run double in the eighth. The Chesterfield, Va., native had also given Maryland the lead right out of the gate with a two-run double in the first inning.
Alfredo Rodriguez continued his offensive surge with a second straight three-hit game, while Charlie White, Ryan Holland and Aaron Etchison had two hits apiece.
Leading 2-1 in the third, White and Rodriguez gave Maryland a 3-1 lead with aggressive base-running following a pair of base hits. With Rodriguez on first, White on second and Holland at the plate, both runners took off for a double steal and Miami catcher David Villasuso's throw sailed into center field, allowing White to score.
Maryland held Miami (23-12, 12-4) scoreless from the third through the seventh innings as Kirkpatrick settled in. The Canes picked up a run in the eighth on a RBI single by Harold Martinez, but the Terps answered with four runs in the bottom half.
Aaron Etchison and White had base hits in the eighth, Rodriguez drew a walk to load the bases and Maryland got its first run of the inning when Holland reached on a fielder's choice. The Terps then executed a perfect delayed steal, with Holland breaking for second and White taking off for home when Miami's Villasuso threw to second. After a Michael Montville walk, Kilbourne doubled to left for a 10-2 lead.
Miami's Eric Whaley (5-2) gave up three runs, one of them earned, on six hits in six innings and took the loss. The sophomore right-hander also struck out seven. Martinez was the lone Hurricane with multiple hits, going 3-for-4.
