TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -Senior Marisha Branson and junior Vangie Galindo each had a pair of hits but the University of Maryland softball team fell 5-0 to Florida State Sunday afternoon in the series finale.
Despite the defeat, the Terps (32-14, 8-5 ACC) remain in the top half of the Atlantic Coast Conference standings and have won 10 of their last 12 games.
After exploding for seven runs in Saturday's second game, Maryland was shut out by the Seminoles on Sunday.
Florida State's Sarah Hamilton pitched 6.2 scoreless innings and struck out six Terrapin batters.
After allowing a single to junior Bree Hanafin, Seminoles reliever Lauren Varsalona forced Branson into a fly out to secure the victory and avoid the series sweep.
Senior Kerry Hickey allowed four hits and three runs, two earned, in the loss. Junior Kendra Knight gave up a pair of subsequent runs in relief while freshman Ashley Czechner pitched a scoreless sixth inning for Maryland.
With a 1-0 lead after the first, Florida State scored a pair in the second after Kristie McConn and Amber Bryant came home via two illegal pitches by Hickey.
The Seminoles chipped in two more in the fifth when Ashley Stager hit a two-run home run to center field.
Maryland will play host to Delaware State in a mid-week doubleheader Wednesday before returning to conference competition at Virginia Tech on Saturday.
