The 28th-ranked Maryland women's tennis team scored one of the biggest doubles upsets in program history Sunday afternoon as Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Jordaan Sanford defeated the No. 1 tandem in the country in the Terps' 5-2 loss at No. 12 Clemson.
Sanchez-Quintanar and Sanford have been stellar all season long, compiling a 16-1 record in dual doubles en route to the No. 39 spot in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) ranking. The duo defeated the Tiger's Josipa Bek and Keri Wong 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, also nabbing the doubles point and 1-0 lead for the Terps. Bek and Wong entered the match ranked first in the country with an 8-2 record in dual singles.
The Terps are 38-13 in dual doubles matches, good for a .745 winning percentage. Doubles has been key for Maryland this year: today's match is the first time the Terps have won the doubles point but dropped the match in the dual season.
Maryland (12-5, 2-5 ACC) was trying for its second upset bid of the weekend against a streaking Clemson team (17-5, 5-2 ACC) which has now won seven in a row and is ranked 12th in the ITA. The Tigers got down 1-0 early after dropping the doubles point, but rolled off four straight points to seal the match.
Junior Ana Belzunce was the other star of the match for the Terps, knocking off Clemson's No. 100 Klara Vyskocilova at No. 3 singles. The junior is 14-3 in dual singles and, along with Luus, has created a formidable tandem at No. 2 doubles going 13-4 in the dual season.
Maryland begins its final homestand of the season Friday when it plays host to 34th-ranked Florida State at 2 p.m. Friday.
Saturday will be Senior Day for the Terps as they take on fifth-ranked Miami at 2 p.m. All matches will be held at the Cole Tennis Courts barring inclement weather.
