Junior Kendra Knight gave up just one hit in 7.0 innings to No. 25 Georgia Tech Sunday as the Maryland softball team fell 2-0 in the series finale. The Jackets' lone hit of the day was a two-run home run by Jessica Sinclair in the top of the second inning.
Knight notched five strikeouts and gave two walks in her complete game performance. She retired nine Yellow Jackets in a row in the final three innings.
Georgia Tech's Lindsey Anderson allowed the Terrapins (22-12, 2-3 ACC) two hits on the day, both in a late seventh inning rally.
Vangie Galindo, who is leading the Terrapins with her .410 batting average, led the seventh inning off with a hard single to the pitcher Anderson. She was out at second when Bree Hanafin, the next batter, reached on a fielder's choice. Two batters later, senior Kerry Hickey singled to right to put runners on first and third with two outs. Next, Nikki Maier walked to load the bases with two outs. Pinch hitter Marisha Branson, a .323 hitter, hit into a fielder's choice to end the game.
Georgia Tech (31-6, 5-0 ACC) had just seven hits in the entire three-game series, but five were home runs. The Yellow Jackets lead the nation with 68 home runs this year.
The Terrapins will play host to Georgetown Wednesday for a midweek doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. Admission is free and Gametracker live stats will be available.
Next weekend, ACC opponent Boston College comes to College Park for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
