MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -
Freshman third baseman Jake Stinnett went 3-for-5 with two home runs, three other Terps had multiple hit games and Maryland beat West Virginia 10-6 Tuesday night at Hawley Field.
The first of Stinnett's two homers came in the second inning when he led off with a blast to left field on a full count that tied the game at 1-1 and started a four-run inning. Alfredo Rodriguez gave the Terps a lead they wouldn't surrender with a sacrifice fly to score Korey Wacker and Ryan Holland followed with a two-run double down the left-field line for a 4-1 advantage.
Right fielder Charlie White and designated hitter Austin Kilbourne, both freshmen, along with junior catcher Aaron Etchison, added two hits apiece as Maryland (14-15) recorded double-digit hits for the third straight game.
Stinnett, who is 6-for-11 with five RBI and four runs in the last three games, hit his second home run in the fifth inning to give Maryland a 6-1 lead.
Sander Beck (2-3) picked up the win, logging 5 2/3 innings and allowing four runs on five hits and six walks while striking out five. The junior right-hander held the Mountaineers (17-14) to one run through five innings, but a leadoff single and two walks in the sixth loaded the bases for Brady Wilson, who drove in three with a double to left field. Freshman Brady Kirkpatrick replaced Beck with two outs and retired Justin McDavid on a pop-out to escape further damage.
With the Maryland lead cut to 6-4, Rodriguez opened the seventh inning with a double to the gap in left center and scored on Etchison's single to center field a batter later. The Terps added two more runs in the inning on a Mountaineer error and a bases loaded walk to Kilbourne.
Maryland scored its 10th run of the night in the eighth inning after White and Rodriguez executed a double steal and Mountaineer catcher Matt Malloy's throw to third was errant, allowing White to come home.
The Mountaineers got a couple of runs in the ninth off of Maryland closer Korey Wacker, who hadn't allowed an earned run in his last seven appearances, but Wacker finished it with a pair of groundouts and a strikeout.
West Virginia starting pitcher Michael Twigg (1-1) took the loss after giving up four runs on three hits and four walks in 1 1/3 innings.
The Terps are off until a three-game series at Clemson this weekend. Game times are 6:30 Friday, 7:00 Saturday and 1:00 Sunday.
