BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Maryland freshman Amina Smith and sophomore Moriah Young competed in field events Friday in the second day of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field East Preliminary Rounds hosted by Indiana University.

Smith cleared 5 feet, 7 inches in the women's high jump to tie for 27th place. Those student-athletes who finish among the top 12 in each event in the East prelims join the top 12 from the West on June 8 to 11 at the NCAA Nationals in Des Moines, Iowa.

After making her first jump at 5-5, Smith needed two attempts to clear 5-7. She missed all three of her tries at 5-8.75. The top 12 finishers each cleared 5-10 to move to the nationals.

Young finished in a tie for 37th in the women's shot put with a mark of 46-8 3/4. A mark of 53-3 1/2 was needed to advance to the next rounds.

Maryland will also have a representative for Saturday's final day of the preliminary rounds, as Kristen Batts will compete in the women's discus.
