GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Maryland softball team finished third in the Atlantic Coast Conference after the end of the regular season Sunday. This year marks the Terrapins' highest league finish since 2002.
The Terps (38-16, 12-7 ACC) will play sixth-seeded North Carolina State (26-22, 7-12 ACC) Friday at noon in the first round of the ACC Tournament in Atlanta next weekend. For the full ACC Tournament bracket and more information, please visit theacc.com.
Maryland's 38 wins this season are the most since 2001 and its 12 ACC wins are a school record.
The Terps split a doubleheader with NC State in College Park earlier this year, winning game one 3-1 and falling in game two 2-1. The first game of the three-game series was cancelled due to inclement weather.
In Sunday's game regular season finale against North Carolina, junior Vangie Galindo had a hit in the first inning that broke Maryland's single season hits record of 70 set by Jenny Belak in 2006. Galindo's .418 batting average this season is currently the highest ever by a Terrapin in a season. Her .329 career average is also the best in Maryland history.
The Terrapin pitching staff of Ashley Czechner, Kerry Hickey and Kendra Knight leads the league in ERA (1.72) and in strikeouts (459).
The ACC will announce annual awards such as Coach, Freshman, Pitcher and Player of the Year, as well as the All-ACC Team later this week.
