GREENSBORO, N.C. - Laura Merrifield was tabbed Atlantic Coast Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in women's lacrosse, as announced Wednesday by league commissioner John Swofford.
Merrifield tallied 45 goals and five assists as a senior captain for the ACC champion Terps. In 2011, the midfielder racked up 18 ground balls and 18 draw controls, while tying for second in the league in game-winning goals with four.
Merrifield, a kinesiology major from Hertfordshire, England, garnered IWLCA First Team All-America status this season. She was named ACC Championship Most Valuable Player after netting a game-high five goals against North Carolina in the league's title match. Her efforts allowed the Terps to capture their third-consecutive league crown.
In addition to Merrifield, sophomore Katie Schwarzmann and freshman Beth Glaros were named to the All-ACC Academic Team.
