SKILLMAN, N.J. - Rising juniors Jordan Hansbrough and Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar, and graduated senior Julia Huschke were recognized for their academic excellence on Wednesday as they were named 2011 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athletes.
In addition, the Terps earned ITA All-Academic Team honors for the second time in the past four seasons.
Hansbrough finished the season with a 17-12 record in doubles, highlighted by Maryland's upset of then-No. 11 Virginia, where she teamed with Sanchez-Quintanar to defeat Virginia's Lindsey Hardenbergh and Caryssa Peretz.
An All-ACC and All-ACC Academic Team member, Sanchez-Quintanar, who finished the season ranked 34th in the ITA, completed one of the most accomplished seasons in Maryland women's tennis history in 2011. She led the team with 17 spring singles victories, six against ranked opponents, including a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Texas A&M's Nazari Urbina in the NCAA Singles Championships.
Huschke, who was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2008, tallied career-highs in singles (9) and doubles wins (16) in 2011. She was instrumental in the Terps' win against then-No. 11 Georgia Tech by defeating Elizabeth Kilborn 6-4, 6-3.
To earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale), be a varsity letter winner and be enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
To achieve ITA All-Academic Team honors, the team must achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale).
