COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's and women's basketball teams celebrated the beginning of the 2012-13 season at Maryland Madness on Friday evening in front of 9,308 fans at Comcast Center.

Both teams unveiled their new Under Armour uniforms at Comcast Center and competed in intrasquad scrimmages, giving Terp fans a taste of the player's skills and talents.

The event began with a student dunk contest, judged by former Terp football players Torrey Smith and LaQuan Williams and former Terp basketball players Juan Dixon, Walt Williams and Dave Neal.

The women's team came out first, with head coach Brenda Frese highlighting the team's trip to becoming ACC Champions and its trip to the Elite Eight last season, emphasizing the goal to go further this year.

"This team is on a mission; this team has a goal," said Frese. "We need all of you in Comcast to come out and support us. Go Terps!"

Madness included performances from various student groups, including Gymkana, Maryland cheerleaders and the Maryland dance team.

The men's team walked out to perform its annual Madness dance before being introduced individually, and then held a 10-minute scrimmage filled with highlight-reel dunks.

"Tonight's about the players having fun," said head coach Mark Turgeon. "I think they had a good time. I can't wait until tomorrow at 11 o'clock. That's what I'm excited about."

Practice for both teams starts Saturday. The women open the season Nov. 9 against Mount St. Mary's at Comcast Center. The men face defending national champion Kentucky on Nov. 9 at Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
