COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A little science never hurts, especially when it comes to something like running at the highest levels.
Dr. Jim Hagberg, a professor of kinesiology at Maryland, is lending his considerable expertise to the University of Maryland track and field teams this season. He works with the Terrapin teams on a volunteer basis, primarily with the distance events.
"Dr. Hagberg has really helped a number of our student-athletes understand some of the more technical aspects of sports performance and how it relates to fitness and physiology," said head coach Andrew Valmon.
"We're taking full advantage of the expertise and very much appreciate his desire to help our men's and women's student-athletes. Being at a university like Maryland allows us to have an outstanding body of knowledge from which to draw in coaching and helping our athletes improve."
Dr. Hagberg is working primarily in the area of scientific laboratory testing of student-athletes to enhance their training and performance. The areas being measured include VO2max, running economy and lactate threshold.
A Distinguished Scholar Teacher at the university, Dr. Hagberg's research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Olympic Committee. He has published more than 230 scientific articles.
