Kyle Graves and Craig Morgan each won individual events and ran on a first-place relay to lead the University of Maryland men to a team victory over the weekend at the Millrose Collegiate Invitational held at the Armory Track & Field Center.
For the women, Amina Smith hit a career-best in the high jump, freshman Thea LaFond won the triple jump and Terrapins won three middle-distance events on the track to finish second in the team standings.
Graves won the mile in 4:08.88, cutting eight seconds off his previous season-best. He moved into 10th place all-time at Maryland in the event indoors. Sumanth Kuppalli was third in 4:12.18 and Kikanae Punyua was seventh in 4:13.84 as each hit qualifying marks for the IC4A Indoor Championships in March.
Morgan went 2:26.33 to win the men's 1,000 by 1.4 seconds and post the best mark of the season by a Terp. His time also moved him into fourth place on the Terps' all-time list.
Morgan and Graves later joined Kuppalli and Punyua to win the 4x800 relay in 7:48.13 and post an IC4A-qualifying mark.
Also for the men, Maryland won the 4x400 relay, with Zack Ray, John Davenport, Mamadou Niang and Shawn David going a season-best 3:17.21 that is 10th all-time at Maryland indoors.
Jon Hill had a strong performance in his first outing since knee surgery last summer, placing third in the high jump at 6-7.
Josh Haghighi had a pair of top-three finishes, going 51-8.25 to post the top mark of the season by the Terps to place third in the shot put after placing second in the weight throw at 54-11.50.
The men scored 86 points to beat Manhattan's 78 and Columbia's 76. Maryland's wemen had 106 points to place second behind Penn (117.5) and ahead of Columbia (85.5).
Smith's career-best indoor mark of 5-11.25 in the women's high jump moved her into fourth all-time at Maryland in that event. She led the Terps to 18 points in that event at the meet, as Thea LaFond was fourth (5-7), Lucile Cancre was seventh in a career-best 5-7 and Amber Melville was eighth at 5-5.25.
LaFond also tied for first in the triple jump with a leap of 39-10 and placed third in her first appearance of the season in the 60-meter hurdles in an ECAC-qualifying 8.80 that puts her eighth on Maryland's indoor list.
Maryland dominated the middle distances at the meet, winning the 800, 1,000 and mile.
Hicks ran Maryland's best time of the season to win the 800, with her 2:11.83 moving her into sixth on the Terps' all-time list. Taylor Bumpas moved up to the 1,000 and won in 2:56.49, the ninth-best mark ever at Maryland in that event. Ashley Cromartie was the third Terp to win in this category, capturing the mile, with Julie Fricke placing second.
The Terps' 4x400 relay team was third, as Arielle Statham, Shade Pratt, Nicole Banker and Hicks went 3:49.44 for the best time of the season for Maryland.
Moriah Young had a pair of second-place finishes in the throws, going 45-9.25 in the shot and 59-4.25 in the weight throw.
Maryland is off next weekend in preparation for the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, to be held Feb. 23 to 25 in Boston.
