ATLANTA - Terrell Stoglin scored 18 points and Sean Mosley added 16, but Georgia Tech pushed past Maryland for a 63-61 victory Saturday afternoon.
Georgia Tech Sophomore Kammeon Holsey recorded the first double-double of his career with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and the Yellow Jackets held Maryland to 24 second-half points.
The Terps (16-12, 6-8 ACC) led 37-31 at halftime and stretched it to 40-31 on three free throws by Stoglin early in the second half, but the Georgia Tech defense clamped down from there.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Yellow Jackets (10-18, 3-11 ACC). Offensively, Georgia Tech had a balance performance with six players who scored at least seven points.
Yellow Jackets center Daniel Miller added 10 points and four second-half blocked shots.
The Terrapins made just 7-of-30 shots in the second half, but still managed to regain the lead when Stoglin -- the ACC's leading scorer with a 21.1-point average -- pushed Maryland to a 56-55 lead on a driving layup through traffic with 2:02 left in the game.
But Georgia Tech junior point guard Mfon Udofia, who was on the bench with four fouls as the Terrapins rallied to re-take the lead, countered with a drive of his own. His layup and the ensuing free throw gave Tech a 58-56 lead with 1:43 left in the contest, and the Jackets never trailed from there.
Maryland made it interesting, however.
Soon after Stoglin was called for traveling, Georgia Tech guard Brandon Reed hit a 3-pointer for a five-point lead with 27 seconds to go.
Maryland center Alex Len threw down an uncontested dunk to pull the Terps within three points, 61-58, with 18 seconds left, and then Georgia Tech's Jason Morris turned the ball over after that when he failed to inbound the ball within five seconds.
But Stoglin missed a 3-pointer seconds later, and Holsey rebounded with 11 seconds remaining.
He made one of two free throws with 8 seconds left, and although Stoglin added a 3-pointer, the Jackets held on.
Morris had nine points for the Jackets, including 3-pointers on Tech's first two possessions of the game, and Reed and Nick Foreman added eight points each.
Mosley made 4 of 5 3-pointers for the Terps, who were 6 of 9 from beyond the arc in the first half but just 1 of 5 in the second half.
