Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland softball team blanked Kent State, 5-0, Sunday at Robert E. Taylor Stadium, behind a complete game shut out from senior Kendra Knight and two doubles from Sloane Van Meter.

Knight went the distance and racked up 11 strikeouts in her 7.0 innings in the circle. She allowed five hits and five walks. She and the rest of the Terrapin defense forced the Golden Flash (9-11) to leave 10 runners on base.

In top of the second, Knight gave up a double and a base hit to put runners on the corners with no outs. She struck out the next three batters swinging.

Senior Kathy McLaughlin reached on an error in the bottom of the second, then Lexi Carroll walked to put two runners on. Next, Van Meter doubled down the left field line to score one and give the Terps (16-6) a 1-0 lead. Sara Acosta followed that up with a walk to load the bases and Nikki Maier drew a walk to score another. Then, on a Golden Flash wild pitch, Van Meter took home for a 3-0 Maryland advantage.

In the top of the fourth, with bases loaded and one out, Knight got two more Kent State batters swinging to end it.

The Terps tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Shannon Bustillos led off with a home run over the left field wall to make it 4-0.

Van Meter led off the bottom of the sixth with her second double of the day and after she was bunted to third by Acosta, Maier brought her in with a sacrifice fly.

McLaughlin and Kelly Trimble each hit doubles in the win.
