Final Stats

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest's Mark Rhine broke a 2-2 tie with a solo home run in the fourth inning and Brett Armour followed with another homer in the fifth to carry the Demon Deacons to a 4-3 win over Maryland Sunday afternoon.

Maryland (11-4, 0-3 ACC) starter Brett Harman (2-1) pitched deep into the game, lasting 7 1/3 innings while striking out five. But the senior, who hadn't allowed an earned run in his first three starts, surrendered four runs on seven hits in suffering the loss.

Brian Holmes improved to 4-0 on the year for the Demon Deacons (14-4, 3-0 ACC) by going 6 1/3 and allowing two runs on six hits.

Shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs, and left fielder Michael Montville and third baseman K.J. Hockaday each had two-hit days to lead Maryland offensively.

Rodriguez scored the game's first run, leading off the third with a double and scoring on a fielder's choice by center fielder Charlie White. Wake Forest, however, scored a pair of runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.

Maryland tied it up in the fourth, with Montville and Hockaday leading off the inning with back-to-back singles, and Montville scoring when Tomo Delp grounded into a double play. Rhine then gave Wake Forest the lead for good with his home run to left field in the bottom of the inning, and Armour provided what proved to be the difference with his solo shot in the fifth. Those home runs represented the first allowed all season by a Maryland pitcher.

Rodriguez pulled the Terps within a run in the ninth, when he led off with a double and later scored on a RBI groundout by pinch hitter Matt Bosse. But Wake Forest closer Michael Dimock picked up his sixth save of the season by getting center fielder Charlie White to fly out and striking out right fielder Jordan Hagel.

Maryland now returns home for a six-game homestand. The Terps play a doubleheader with St. Peter's Wednesday at 3 p.m., and then host North Carolina this weekend.
