COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Making the most of friendly surroundings, seniors picked up three of the Terrapins' seven individual victories Saturday at the Maryland Invitational track and field meet at the Kehoe Track Complex.
Zack Ray had a career-best mark in the men's 110-meter hurdles, Jon Hill matched his outdoor career-best to win the men's high jump and Kiani Profit rallied to win the women's 400 hurdles for Maryland.
Also winning for Maryland were junior Moriah Young in the women's shot put, freshman Amber Melville in the women's high jump, freshman Thea LaFond in the women's triple jump, junior Julie Fricke in the women's 3,000, both men's relay squads and the women's 4x400 relay team.
Ray went 14.11 to win the 110 hurdles. Ray missed all of last season with an injury, but has more than fully recovered. His time ranks 10th all-time at Maryland and he becomes the third-fastest Terp in the event since 2000. Joshua McFrazier of Temple was second in 14.28.
Hill took over first place in the men's high jump by clearing 6-8 on his first attempt. Joshua Houston of Navy made the height on his third try. Hill then cleared 6-9.75 on his second attempt, but Houston missed at that height. Hill went on to clear 7-0.50 to equal his best mark from last season.
Profit trailed Georgetown's London Finley until the seventh hurdle, but rallied down the front stretch. She finished in an ECAC-qualifying 58.98, winning the event over Finley by nearly two seconds. Profit, a three-time All-American for the Terps, is competing in her final outdoor season at Maryland after missing the 2011 outdoor schedule with an injury.
Melville won for the second straight week. She was one of three competitors to clear 5-5.75, but won the event by clearing that height on her second attempt. Amina Smith was second with Lucile Cancre tying for fourth (5-3.75) and Thea LaFond in seventh (5-3.75).
Fricke went wire-to-wire to win the women's 3,000 in a career-best 9:58.53. She became only the eighth Terrapin ever to break 10 minutes in that event, moving into eighth all-time. Temple's Jenna Dubrow was second in 10:01.14. Becky Yep was fourth in 10:12.76.
Maryland's men's 4x100 relay team of Zack Ray, John Davenport, Dareem David and Floyd Hawkes went 41.49 to win. The time was the best of the season by more than a second, was an IC4A qualifier and just missed Maryland's all-time list.
The Terrapins' 4x400 relay on the women's side had an ECAC-qualifying time of 3:47.81 to pick up the win. Arielle Statham, Kiani Profit, Shade Pratt and DeAnna Brown had the best mark of the season. Statham made up the early stagger on the first leg, but the Terps took control on Profit's second leg and held on for the victory. LaFond also went wire-to-wire for the victory in the women's triple jump. Her best mark of 38-2 came on her second attempt, with both her first and second jumps besting the rest of the field. Temple's Saudia Lawrence was second in 35-10.75.
Young won the shot put on her final attempt of the competition at a season-best 49-4.50. She edged Temple's Margo Britton, who took the lead with a mark of 49-1 in the fifth round.
Zach Ray, John Davenport, Chris Brown and Shawn David ran 3:16.96 in the men's 4x400 relay, posting an IC4A-qualifying mark. The Terps took the lead on the second leg and out-dueled the Owls over the rest of the way.
Navy won the team competition for the men and women. The Midshipmen scored 244 points to win the men's event. The Terps were fourth with 128, behind Temple (143.5) and UMBC (135.5). The Navy women scored 206.5, beating Temple (179) and Maryland (173.5).
Maryland competes next weekend at the Florida Relays in Gainesville.
