COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland softball team fell to Virginia Tech 5-1 Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series at Robert E. Taylor Stadium.

Kathy McLaughlin and Nikki Maier each notched three hits to help Maryland (18-14, 0-3 ACC) outhit Virginia Tech, but after the Hokies (27-12, 6-2) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, the Terrapins couldn't tie it up.

The Hokies' Lauren Gaskill led off the top of the first with a bunt single to start the game. A few batters later with the bases loaded, Kelsey Mericka hit a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Kristen Froelich singled to score the second Virginia Tech run.

The Terrapins tried to rally in the bottom of the first with a leadoff hit from McLaughlin, but they left two runners on. They would leave runners on in the next three innings.

Maryland got its run in the bottom of the third. McLaughlin led off with a first pitch double to left. Amanda McCann bunted her over to third and she scored when Bree Hanafin hit a sacrifice fly.

Next, the Terrapins will welcome local opponent George Mason (9-24) to College Park Wednesday for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. at Robert E. Taylor Stadium. Admission is free and parking is free and open after 4 p.m.
