Michael Boyden pitched three scoreless innings, Brady Kirkpatrick allowed just one hit in five relief innings, and Maryland recorded its school-record eighth shutout this season with a 3-0 win over West Virginia Wednesday evening.
The Terps (22-13), who have two shutouts in their last four games, lead the ACC and now have the school record for shutouts in a season. The previous mark was seven, set in 1968.
Against West Virginia (14-20), Maryland allowed just three hits in the game and none after the fourth inning. Boyden started and struck out four while allowing a couple of hits, but the Maryland defense prevented any damage.
Center fielder Korey Wacker had two outfield assists, throwing out a runner at home in the first inning and another at third base in the third inning.
Kirkpatrick (2-4), meanwhile, worked around four walks to earn the win. The sophomore allowed a single to the first batter he faced, but induced the next Mountaineer into a 4-6-3 double play. Kirkpatrick and Maryland didn't allow a hit the rest of the way.
Charlie Haslup retired all three batters he faced in the ninth, including a pair of strikeouts, to earn his first save of the season.
Offensively, Maryland was led by Tomo Delp who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Making his first start of the season in left field, Delp had singles in the sixth and seventh innings and is now batting .304 this season.
The Terps took a 1-0 lead in the third inning thanks to Wacker's speed. The senior got an infield hit to lead off the inning, stole second and third and then scored on a RBI groundout by Delp.
Ryan Holland drove in Maryland's second run with a bloop single in the sixth and Delp drove in the final run with his seventh-inning single through the left side.
West Virginia starting pitcher Zach Bargeron (0-2), who allowed a run on two hits in 2 1/3 innings, took the loss.
The win improved Maryland's home record to 13-4 this season, including 10-1 in non-conference games. In those 17 games, the Terps' pitching staff has a 1.51 ERA and is holding opponents to a .193 batting average.
Maryland returns to conference play on Friday, when Duke comes to town for a three-game set. Game times are 6 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
