Beards Named ACC Player of the Week

April 24, 2012

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Sophomore Candice Beards of the Maryland softball team was named ACC Player of the Week Tuesday for the first time in her career.

Beards led the Terrapins (27-18, 5-7 ACC) to a 4-1 week at the plate with a .538 average, seven hits, and seven RBIs. She walked six times while only striking out once and scored four runs. In Maryland's three games at NC State, the Ringwood, N.J., native had four RBIs and hit three doubles.

When injuries hit the Terrapins over the weekend in Raleigh, Beards jumped in to play first base. She has helped the Terps win seven of their last eight.

This is the Terps' sixth weekly conference this season, with Shannon Bustillos earning Player of the Week honors twice and Lexi Carroll earning it once. Senior Kendra Knight has twice been named the league's Pitcher of the Week.

Maryland will play host to Delaware State (19-14-1, 9-3 MEAC) Wednesday in a midweek doubleheader in College Park. The Terps and the Hornets will play at 5 p.m. in Robert E. Taylor Stadium. Admission is free and parking will be free after 4 p.m. Fans that park before 4 p.m. are subject to ticketing. GameTracker live stats will be available.

After Wednesday's games, the Terps will hit the road to play three games at Boston College (20-22, 2-13) over the weekend. They will play two games Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. as well.
