GREENSBORO, N.C. -
Seniors Vangie Galindo and Kendra Knight of the Maryland softball team both earned weekly honors from the Atlantic Coast Conference for their performances last week in the Terps' two wins over No. 19 Florida State.
Galindo was named ACC Player of the Week for the first time this season and Knight was named Pitcher of the Week for the third time this year.
Galindo led the Terrapins with a .583 average at the plate. She went 4-for-5 Sunday in the series finale with the game-tying double in the bottom of the seventh and a single in the 10th that also made her Maryland's all-time hits leader with 220 in her career.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh on Sunday, two runners on and the Terps down 3-1, the Fontana, Calif., native doubled to left center to tie the game at three-all and force extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, Galindo led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a Seminoles error. Sara Acosta brought her in for the game-winning run.
Knight had 24.0 innings pitched and complete games in all three games vs. No. 19 Florida State to help the Terrapins take the series from the Seminoles. She allowed just 11 hits, four earned runs and racked up 21 strikeouts. The Seminoles, who averaged .280 at the plate as a team before this weekend, hit just .134 against her and stranded 26 runners on base. The Virginia Beach, Va., native also broke Maryland's single-season record for strikeouts on Sunday with 292.
Maryland will head to Chapel Hill, N.C. this week for its 18th appearance in the ACC Tournament. The fourth-seeded Terrapins will take on fifth-seeded Virginia Tech Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at North Carolina's Anderson Softball Stadium. Thursday's game will be shown live online for free at ESPN3.com and GameTracker live stats will be available.
The Terrapins (34-19, 10-8) ACC are riding a hot streak and have won 14 of their last 16 games to end the regular season.
Virginia Tech (38-18, 12-8) swept the Terps March 31-April 1 in College Park.
